Who is it for

This course is suitable for those working or as volunteers in a supervised role that support pupils' learning within an early year's environment for a minimum of 350 placement hours (60 days).

You need to cover the following age ranges:–0–1 year 11 months (25 hours/ 4days), 2 to 2years 11months (133 hours/ 23days) and 3–5 years (192 hours / 32days).

What will I need

Learners will also require a GCSE C grade in English and Maths to count in the ratios at Level 3 in childcare settings. However there is no requirement for learners to have achieved GCSE English and Maths upon commencement or completion of a standalone Early Years Educator qualification but this may impact on employment within the sector.

What is covered

The units cover children and young people's development, the requirements of safeguarding, a longitudinal study on a child and the importance of equality, diversity and inclusion. In order to aid holistic delivery and assessment there are structured units around the following four themes:

• Theme 1: Health and well–being
• Theme 2: Legislation, frameworks and professional practice
• Theme 3: Play, development and learning for school readiness
• Theme 4: Professional development

How is the course assessed

An approved assessor will visit you in your workplace to assess your practical competence, knowledge and understanding. You will need to submit a portfolio to show your competence in all areas of the qualification.

A portfolio of evidence will be completed and verified by your allocated assessor. This will include written assignments, direct observations, professional discussions and reflective accounts. There are no final examinations.

What can this course lead to

A Foundation Degree in Early Years, Playwork and Education.
