Who is it for
This Technical Qualification consists of a core section including health and safety, material science, and engineering mathematics with the subject specialism being maintenance engineering technologies. After completing basic skills modules you will progress on to learning about advanced diagnostic techniques for multiple mechanical systems. You will work in the engineering workshops to gain the required hand and machining skills, whilst attending theory lessons conducted in a classroom.
An industry–based work placement is required to run alongside your course, this must be equivalent to at least 45 days and will further reinforce your newly learned skills and offer a true insight into the engineering industry.
What will I need
5 GCSEs at grades 5 or above, including at least a grade 5 or above in English Language and maths.
What is covered
This programme focusses your skills and knowledge for working in within engineering manufacturing. As part of the programme, you will study the following skills and knowledge:
• Processes of production and manufacturing
• Materials used in production, manufacturing fabrication environments
• Specialist machinery utilised in the production and manufacturing environments
• Product and project management
• Quality assurance and quality control
• Machining and toolmaking technologies
You will study utilising learning resources and materials such as:
• schemes of work
• tutor delivery guides
• classroom activities
• blended learning activities (eLearning)
• tutor delivery guides
• home study tasks
How is the course assessed
T Levels are exam–based.
In the first year, you will sit two core knowledge exam papers in June. These are two externally set and marked exams covering knowledge from part 1 which is the engineering common core element. Both are 2.5 hours and have a weighting of 35%.
You will also complete one employer–set project (externally marked) covering knowledge and core skills from part 1 which is the engineering common core element. This is 21 hours in duration and has a weighting of 30%.
In the second year, you will complete an occupational specialism assessment, demonstrating application of the relevant knowledge, skills and behaviours for the occupation. This is 24 hours 15 minutes in duration and has a weighting of 100%.
In addition, you will also have to have achieved:
– The minimum requirement for English and maths (grade 5 or above at GCSE, or Functional Skills 2)
– Successful completion of an industry placement
Your overall grade will be calculated from the grades achieved on Core and Occupational Specialism.
What can this course lead to
Successful completion of this course accrues UCAS points and a number of major UK universities accept T Levels. Please see points achieved by grades below.
T Level Distinction* = 168 UCAS Tariff Points = A*A*A* at A Level
T Level Distinction = 144 UCAS Tariff Points = AAA at A Level
T Level Merit = 120 UCAS Tariff Points = BBB at A Level
T Level Pass (C or above) = 96 UCAS Tariff Points = CCC at A Level
T Level Pass (D or E) = 72 UCAS Tariff Points = DDD at A Level
Due to the high–level academic nature of the T–Level and the considerable industry placement element totalling a minimum of 315 hours, the course is also designed to allow you to progress directly in to the engineering industry in your chosen field, or you can progress on to an Apprenticeship.
Successful completion of this T Level will allow you to progress to roles such as:

• Aviation Engineer
• Maritime Engineering
• Machinist
• Mechatronics Engineer

Other details
Your T Level will include an industry placement with an employer to develop the practical and technical skills required for the occupation.
We will support you in finding relevant work placements but you must demonstrate willingness to travel to your work placements.
These will last a minimum of 315 hours (around 45 days). Employers can offer industry placements as a block, day release or a combination of the two.
