This is a Level 3 Apprenticeship Standard and is equivalent to A Levels.
There is the opportunity to progress onto a Higher Level/Degree Apprenticeship on successful completion of the independent End–point assessment.

The occupation involves carrying out advanced skilled work, primarily using timber products, either on a construction site, or in a workshop, creating and installing building components. The advanced carpenter is able to undertake complex job tasks, requiring high levels of practical skills and knowledge, in addition to managing their own work and leading small teams.
You can apply for an Apprenticeship if you are living in England, over 16 and not in full–time education can apply.
You must be in paid employment for the duration of your Apprenticeship course, you cannot be self–employed or a volunteer. Employers must pay you the minimum Apprenticeship wage or more, for a minimum of 30 hours a week.
Interview Skills Assessment
All candidates will be invited to a pre interview and initial assessments in English and Maths with the Apprenticeship Recruitment Officers.
What will I need
Entry requirements of GCSEs at grade C/3 and above including Maths and English or an equivalent functional skills qualification. You will also be required to have completed a Level 2 Carpentry and Joinery Apprenticeship or equivalent qualification.
Please note you may also be asked to completed Maths and English qualifications as part of your Apprenticeship programme.
You will also need a suitable supportive employer who will guide you through your Apprenticeship. We strongly advise that you complete a minimum of 2 weeks work experience with your chosen employer to ensure the construction industry is right for you.

What is covered
On this Apprenticeship you will the covers skills, knowledge and behaviours required for advanced site carpentry and joinery.
• Understand the technical principles of advanced site carpentry, such as effective and appropriate installation practices, being able to apply this knowledge in preparing and fixing complex, non–standard timber based products and components, such as erecting inclined roofs, making, assembling and erecting complex roof structures, including hip and dormer cut roofs, maintaining and repairing non–standard joinery products.
• Understand how to carry out advanced calculations and work out cutting angles for complex carpentry work such as using a roofing square to calculate roof spar lengths and using a sliding bevel to mark out splayed joints.
• Understand how to form complex joints associated with advanced site carpentry work, such as splayed and plumb.
• Utilise a range of advanced trade skills which allow them to carry out complex carpentry work to highly skilled standards and tolerances, to include measuring, marking out, fitting, cutting, splicing, finishing, positioning and securing.
• Install complex and non–standard doors and window frames, shaped door and hatch linings, partitions with openings and changes of direction and staircases with turns.
• Install accessible service encasements, bespoke wall/ floor units and fitments, panelling and stair components (e.g. balustrades, handrails and spindles with turns).
• Erect inclined roofs with gables, roof verges and eaves, including finishing's, joists and roof coverings.
• Repair and or replace frames, mouldings, floor or flat roof joist coverings, door and window ironmongery, window components, structural joists and rafters, window components, guttering and downpipes.
• Effective communication, team working and leadership.
• Independent working and adaptability.
• Logical thinking.
• Working effectively and time management.
On completion of this course you should be able to work in the capacity of a fully trained artisan, and supervise lower grade tradesmen and in addition you will be able to:
• Instruct in carpentry and woodcutting machinery
• Estimate and cost in relation to trade
• Read and interpret scale working drawings
• Plan and progress work
Apprentices are expected to attend college 1 day a week as part of their 20% off–the–job training. Additional off–the–job training hours are expected to be completed within the workplace.

How is the course assessed
As well as being assessed continually throughout your Apprenticeship course, all Apprentices are required to complete an End–point Assessment in order to complete their qualification.
The EPA is conducted independently to your employer and Peterborough Regional College and is designed to test whether you have gained the skills, knowledge and behaviours outlined in the Carpentry and Joinery Apprenticeship Standard. You will be graded according to your individual performance.
Throughout the duration of your Apprenticeship you will complete a number of assessments, only when these have been completed can your assessor and employer agree to put your forward for the 'Gateway'. This gateway allows you to focus on and prepare for your EPA in order to complete your Apprenticeship. During this time your employer will be expected to support you to prepare for your EPA through regular training and guidance.
Throughout the Apprenticeship it is your responsibility with the help from your employer, assessor and college tutors to ensure you are ready for your final independent EPA.

What can this course lead to
After completing this Apprenticeship you will gain a Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Wood Occupations. The achievement of this standard will meet the requirements of the Construction Skill Certification Scheme (CSCS) 'Skilled Worker' standard, which is widely recognised as a 'licence to operate' in a skills construction industry.
Candidates also have the opportunities to continue to work within the carpentry industry, gain promotion or start their own business.
Are there any additional costs
Learners may need to purchase uniform and/or equipment depending on the employer.
Apprentices are also required to apply for a Trainee CSCS card which may involve an additional cost. There is no requirement for the employer to support you with this cost, you would need to discuss this with your employer directly.
A Carpentry Apprentice will work in many different locations and could involve some travelling. This will mean early starts and sometimes late finishes. The weather is another consideration as the majority of work will take place outside. There can be some moving and handling of heavy materials in dusty environments which could have some impact on your health.
An Apprentice will work on average 40 hours a week, this may vary throughout the year dependent on work load. The salary for a qualified carpenter/joiner can start at £12,000; this can rise to £28,000 for a fully qualified and experienced carpenter/joiner.
As an employed status Apprentice you will:
• Earn a wage – the national minimum wage for Apprentices is £4.15 an hour, although many Apprentices earn more than this. Please note you must be a paid employee of the business, you cannot be self–employed or a volunteer.
• Have a contract of employment – this must be given to you at the start of your employment.
• Get paid holidays – these will be detailed in your contract of employment.
• Receive training – it is crucial to the success of your Apprenticeship that your employer supports you with regular training. The Apprenticeship standard states you must complete a minimum of 20% off–the–job training which can also include training at Peterborough Regional College and training on site. You will also be expected to build a portfolio and complete tasks on One–file and Google Classrooms.
