Air and Defence Students Experience Flight at RAF Wittering

Air and Defence students at Inspire Education Group experienced the flight of a lifetime this week at RAF Wittering, following their achievement of winning the ‘In Pursuit of Excellence’ award. The prestigious award, sponsored by the Royal Air Force, was presented to the students at the Air and Defence College (ADC) 2023-2024 Graduation last June.

Philip Michelson, Level 2 IT and Air and Defence student at Stamford College and Aaron Atkinson, Level 3 Engineering and Air and Defence student at Peterborough College were given an exclusive opportunity to fly with RAF personnel, gaining first-hand experience of aviation operations and furthering their understanding of the skills required in the industry.

Philip was thrilled with winning the ‘In Pursuit of Excellence’ award and having the opportunity to fly at RAF Wittering saying, “I was so surprised, it was a massive achievement winning.” He added, “I had an amazing time flying, I’ve been to RAF camps before but never to fly a plane, the experience was amazing and has solidified my aspirations of becoming a pilot in the future.”

The trip was equally amazing for Aaron who said, “It was really good! We went up and we did the basics of learning how to fly and then he gave me the controls of the plane.” Aaron added, “We did a couple loops that were nerve wracking, the pilot had control of the first loop and then he let me do the second one!”

Sara Gibson, Air and Defence Coordinator said “The Royal Air Force sponsor the “In the Pursuit of Excellence” award each year, providing our Air & Defence College winners with a unique opportunity – to take an Air Experience Flight with an RAF pilot!” Sara added, “This is not only a fantastic way to reward student success, commitment and high standards, but to also provides an unforgettable moment for award winners. Our partnership with the Royal Air Force truly allows all Air & Defence College students opportunities to gain unique access to their world, and continues to inspire students to make positive career choices.”

Philip praised the Air and Defence College saying ‘ The course has allowed me to explore jobs I want to do through trips and subjects in class are always preparing you for your next steps!’ Aaron added, “If you’re considering going into the RAF or any other defence industry, definitely consider it! After I complete my course I want to apply to be an Aircraft Technician”
