Students get fantastic opportunity with a global brand!
URBN is the global portfolio company for the brands Urban Outfitters, Anthropologie and Free people and recently moved their European distribution centre to Peterborough supplying UK, EU and EEA markets. URBN were looking for students from Peterborough College’s Art and Design courses to collaborate with them to create artwork for the walls in their staff canteen, meeting rooms and other areas of the newly built fulfilment centre as part of their work experience.
Students across the disciplines of Art, Graphic Design and Photography attended a live online briefing with the team at the URBN fulfilment centre where they were provided with the history of the company, shown where their artwork would be placed and given an overview of the ethos of the brand to inform their designs.
Over the next few weeks students developed their initial ideas, researching URBN’s brand identity and products. Sketches and plans for artwork were created ready to submit to the team at URBN. Students created digital mock-ups of proposed designs for wall murals, traditionally painted artworks, digital drawings and photographs.
All students had to work within the URBN brand guidelines, choosing an aesthetic that matched URBN’s ethos and style. 33 students from across the disciplines submitted a high standard of artwork for the team at URBN to consider.
Feedback from URBN on ALL the students work was excellent, Samantha Redford from URBN said: “All applications were fantastic, we wish we could have invited everyone to URBN to showcase their work, their submissions were “on brand” and ideal for the spaces intended”.
As a result, work experience opportunities were offered to seven students whose work will be either used as a single piece of art in one of their offices or meeting rooms as well as other pieces being enlarged for murals in their canteen and conference spaces.
Students are now in the development and refinement stage of their final designs. They attended a site visit on Wednesday 30th March where they were given the opportunity to see where their artwork will be placed, get to meet the URBN team and work directly with them. They were given a tour of the fulfilment centre, offering them the chance to fully understand the company. They will then work to create artwork ready to be printed on a large scale, working directly with URBN’s choice of printing company.
Georgie Wise – Graphic Design Lecturer at Peterborough College said: “The students have enjoyed being part of this live brief. It has been a rewarding opportunity for them to work directly with a global brand. The artwork that has been produced so far shows the excellent understanding our students have for developing work that is highly creative, fits a brief and is client ready. These are great skills that will enhance the portfolios of all the students who submitted work, as they have had this wonderful opportunity to work with a global brand.”
